SMS Verbal Consent Script
Version 2026-09-21.1 · Used when transportation is scheduled by phone or at intake
When a patient, parent, or guardian schedules a transport with Manny Transit Co. by phone (or in person at intake) and wants text message updates, staff read the following script word for word and record the answer in the trip record. Written consent is also available at any time through our Text Message Sign-Up page.
1. What staff say
“Would you like to receive text message updates about this ride from Manny Transit Co. — for example, a confirmation of your scheduled ride and a message when your driver is on the way?
Message frequency varies by trip. Message and data rates may apply. You can reply STOP at any time to stop receiving messages, or reply HELP for help. Agreeing to text messages is not required to receive transportation services.
Do you agree to receive these text messages at [read back the mobile number]?”
2. If the person agrees
- Confirm the mobile number by reading it back digit by digit.
- Confirm who is consenting: the patient, or a parent, legal guardian, power of attorney, or caregiver on the patient's behalf.
- Record in the trip record: date and time, staff member's name, who consented and their relationship to the patient, and “verbal SMS consent — script v2026-09-21.1”.
3. If the person declines
Say: “No problem — we'll reach you by phone call instead.” Record “declined SMS” in the trip record. Never send text messages to a number that has not consented.
4. What the messages contain
Ride status messages are kept generic to protect privacy. They state the sender (Manny Transit Co.), the ride status or driver arrival time, and how to opt out. They never name the pickup or drop-off facility, the reason for the appointment, or any medical condition.
